| Parish Shield The All Saint's Episcopal Church parish shield has an interesting history. The white cross raguly comes from the Lawrence family coat-of-arms and was chosen in honor of Bishop W. Appleton Lawrence, who was instrumental in establishing the congregation. The white stars with golden crowns were inspired by a passage in the Book of Revelation and recall a favorite All Saints' Day hymn "Who are these like stars appearing?" (#286 in The Hymnal) The motto "Compassed About" which appears at the bottom of the shield comes from the traditional collect and epistle for a Saint's Day, "Since we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses..." (Hebrews 12:1) The church has a beautiful banner depicting the shield which is regularly displayed behind the altar. The banner was lovingly made by a parishioner in the 1970s. The shield is also used on correspondence from the church, including the monthly parish newsletter, The Compass. |
